Drive a few blocks out from our shop on West Main Avenue and you pass three separate eras of Gaston County housing. The Loray Mill village sits on the west side with close to 500 frame mill houses built between about 1901 and the early 1920s, most of them on narrow lots where the garage was added decades later, if at all. York-Chester next door holds more than 540 structures, mostly Queen Anne and Craftsman bungalows, with detached one-car garages at the back of the lot and openings too narrow for a standard 16-foot door. Brookwood came later, mid-1930s through the late 1940s, Tudor and Colonial Revival with slightly deeper drives.
