Single Car Garage Door: What Homeowners Should Know Before You Order - Century Garage Door Service

The short answer

A single car garage door covers one vehicle bay, and the width is nearly settled before you start, so the height, the headroom above the opening, the flat jamb at each side, and the way the bay gets used decide the rest. To have your opening measured and the door specified from those figures, call Century Garage Door Service at 833-435-4540.

A single car garage door is one door over one vehicle bay, and on most American housing that opening runs somewhere between 8 and 10 feet across by 7 or 8 feet tall. So the width question is close to answered before you pick up a tape measure. What isn’t answered is whether the opening is square, whether the wall above it takes ordinary hardware, whether the jambs have room for the vertical track, and what the door has to put up with once it’s hanging.

Those four decide the order. Not the color swatch.

And a wide opening hands you a genuine fork in the road, so that gets a section of its own below.

What counts as a single car garage door

The word single describes the bay, not the door. A single car garage door is any door sized to cover one vehicle opening, and it can be steel, wood, a composite, or glass set in aluminum framing.

Most singles are sectional. Four or five horizontal sections hinged together, hinges taking the fold at every joint, rollers riding a track up each jamb, and a counterbalance overhead doing the lifting. Older detached garages sometimes still carry a one-piece tilt-up slab that swings out on pivot arms as it rises, and that one needs clear driveway space in front of it.

So the first thing to settle isn’t size. It’s whether you’re replacing like for like or switching from a one-piece to a sectional, because that rewrites the hardware, the track layout, the counterbalance, and the room the door wants overhead.

What fits a one car opening

Nine feet by seven is the workhorse, the width builders framed for decade after decade and the one suppliers keep deepest in stock. Eight feet still turns up on older detached garages, generous for a narrow 1950s sedan and snug for anything current. Ten feet is the wide single, and it earns its place when a work van or a full size pickup goes through daily.

Wider than ten and you’re into a custom order.

Opening widthComfortable forWatch for
About 8 feetCompact cars, or a bike plus real storageMirrors land close to the jamb
About 9 feetAny sedan, crossover, wagon, or midsize truckThe default, and easiest to source
About 10 feetFull size pickups and work vansLonger span, so hardware grade matters
Over 10 feetShop bays and RV storageCustom build, header designed for it

Measure the finished opening rather than the old door. Jamb face to jamb face at the floor, then again up near the header, and work from the narrower of the two figures.

Height, and the vehicle you actually park

Seven feet clears an ordinary car with room over the roof. Eight feet is what you want if a pickup carries a bed rack, a van has a roof vent, a rooftop tent lives up there through the summer, or bikes ride on a carrier that swings up off the hitch.

Here’s the part people miss.

Height is not a swap. Going from a seven foot door to an eight foot one in the same opening means cutting the header higher and reframing, then a longer track, an extra section, a fresh counterbalance specification, and different drums for the added travel. Nobody sells that as an upgrade, because it isn’t one. So measure the tallest thing you park, add clearance above it, write the figure on the wall, and buy the height once.

Space above a single car garage door, and the torsion spring that lives there

An older one bay garage usually has less room above the opening than a modern build gives you, and low ceilings, exposed rafters, a light hung dead center of the bay, and a water heater tucked hard against a jamb are all common in a single garage. Where the ceiling can’t spare the room, low headroom track brings the requirement down, and our garage door sizes guide gives every clearance and how to measure it. A wall mounted opener driving the shaft directly clears the rail out of the bay altogether.

Why it bites harder on one bay than on two is storage. A detached single usually has no attic over it, so the ceiling ends up as open rafters with a sheet of plywood laid across them and a few seasons of boxes sitting on top. A double has the width to route hardware around that. A single has one strip of wall and one ceiling run to work with, and both are usually spoken for already.

So walk the bay and look up before you order anything. Whatever sits above the opening or across the rafters behind it either moves or gets designed around, and that is a conversation for the specifying stage rather than for installation day.

A phone camera saves everybody a paragraph of description here. Take a picture looking up at that wall and another from inside the bay looking back, then send them along with your figures.

A single car garage door versus a double on a wide opening

On a 16 foot opening you can hang one double door or two single car garage doors, and the second option needs a structural post between them. That post is the whole argument.

A double gives you one door, one counterbalance, one opener, and one clear span you can drive anything through. Two singles give you twice the hardware and a permanent column in the middle of your driveway approach.

Point of comparisonOne double doorTwo single car garage doors
Center postNone, clear spanRequired, and it carries the header load
OpenersOneTwo, or one bay left manual
RepairsOne system to look afterTwo of everything, though a fault takes only one bay out of service
LookWide and modernCarriage house, which suits an older frontage
Vehicle accessAnything that fits the widthAim carefully, twice

So here’s the honest answer. If your opening is already framed as one wide clear span, converting to two doors means adding a load bearing post under the header, which is framing work with a permit conversation attached. If the house came with two separate openings and a pier already between them, leave the framing alone. Buy two doors.

Fighting the framing you have is the expensive road. Every time.

Insulation and material on a single car garage door

A single bay garage is usually smaller than a double and often detached, sometimes the only thing standing between a workshop and February. Insulation earns more thought here than the floor area suggests, especially where the bay shares a wall or a ceiling with heated rooms.

Steel is the default and deserves to be. It holds its shape and takes a factory finish well, and the insulated versions add a back liner over a foam core. Wood and composite look right on an older detached garage while asking for more upkeep. Glass in aluminum framing suits a bay you’ve converted into a studio, and it trades thermal performance for daylight.

Less width means less span and less weight, so an insulated door on a one car opening doesn’t lean on its hardware the way a wide insulated double does, and our garage door insulation guide has the R-value ranges and how the layers go together.

What drives the cost of a single car garage door

Width and height set the baseline, then the panel construction, the counterbalance specification that follows the finished weight, the glass and hardware grade, and hauling the old door away, and our new garage door cost guide breaks those drivers down further.

Safety, and where a single car garage door stops being a homeowner job

Taking an old single car garage door down and hanging a new one looks like one big afternoon with a helper and a couple of ladders. It isn’t, and the reason sits above the opening rather than in the panels.

Never adjust, wind, unwind, replace, or release the tension on the torsion springs above the door or the lift cables running down the sides, because they hold hundreds of pounds of stored energy and get replaced with winding bars by a trained technician. Drive gear internals and main power wiring are technician work too.

That rules out the counterbalance, which is exactly the part that has to change when a new door weighs something different from the one it replaced. Reusing whatever is up there because it looks fine is the worst call available on this job. Spring and cable work belongs at garage door spring repair. The trade specifies from the residential standards published through the DASMA technical data sheets on residential garage doors (dasma.com).

FAQs: single car garage door

What size is a single car garage door?

One bay, one door, and the width lands between 8 and 10 feet on almost every American single garage. Nine feet is the width builders framed for most often, and 8 feet still turns up on older detached garages. Height is 7 or 8 feet. Measure your own finished opening rather than the old door hanging in it.

Only with framing work first. Two doors on one wide opening need a load bearing post between them, carrying what the header carries now, so that’s a structural change rather than a door order. If your garage already has two separate openings with a pier between them, two doors is the natural answer. Call 833-435-4540 to talk it through.

Usually, on a 9 or 10 foot width, though the mirrors are what to check rather than the body. Height matters more here. A stock pickup clears a 7 foot opening comfortably, while a bed rack, a roof box, a light bar on the cab, or a loaded roof basket can change that answer fast. Measure the tallest point of the loaded truck.

Not as a door swap. Widening an opening means a new header sized to the span, new jambs, and the framing above rebuilt to carry the load, then a wider door and a counterbalance matched to it. That is structural work with a door fitted afterward, so plan it as a build rather than as a replacement.

Each door needs its own drive if you want both of them automatic, so two doors means two openers or one bay left on manual operation. A single bay is also where a wall mounted unit earns its keep, because it frees the ceiling for storage and works where headroom is short. One double door needs one opener.

Closely, yes. Exactly, probably not. Panel profiles and factory finishes get revised over the years, so a new single car garage door rarely lines up perfectly with a door that went up years ago. Two honest routes. Replace both bays so they weather together, or accept a small difference and paint both doors later. Measure both openings before you order, because they aren’t always identical.

Usually, because a single carries fewer panels and less material than a double of the same build. Two singles of the same width can still land far apart, though. Panel construction, the counterbalance specification, glass, hardware grade, and the finish all move the figure.
