Century Garage Door Repair Service works from East First Street in downtown Mount Vernon, across from the old post office, in the most densely populated city in Westchester. Close to seventy-four thousand people live on just over four square miles. The median home here was built in 1953, six in ten went up before 1960, and about a third before 1940. Only around a quarter of homes are detached single-family houses. The rest are two- to four-family houses and apartment buildings, and the detached share is highest on the east side of the city.
That density goes back to how Mount Vernon started. In the early 1850s a cooperative called the New York Industrial Home Association No. 1, organized by John Stevens, bought farmland here to build homes for tradesmen and working people from the city, and the lots were laid out small. Plenty of garages still show it: narrow driveways, detached single-car garages tucked at the back of the lot, and two-family houses where both households share one door.
Storms here tend to arrive as wind and water. On the 15th of August 2008 a microburst with winds of sixty-five to seventy-five miles an hour did its worst damage along Packman Avenue, and the same storm flooded Macquesten Parkway deep enough to stop trains on the Harlem Line at Fleetwood. In July 2009 winds near seventy brought trees down on West Street while inch-wide hail fell in Fleetwood, and Ida in September 2021 left deep floodwater on South Columbus Avenue. The Hutchinson River Parkway at East Lincoln Avenue floods so often it barely makes the news. Winters vary. Mount Vernon sits between the long-term weather stations at Dobbs Ferry, which averages about a hundred and nine nights below freezing a year, and LaGuardia at about sixty-two, and the February 2013 blizzard left more than seventeen inches of snow in the city.
Door jammed, spring snapped, panel pushed in by a falling branch? Give us a call. We are on East First Street, the common parts ride on the truck, and most Mount Vernon calls get a same-day window.
Tell us what the door does, what you heard and whether the opener runs. If a branch or tree hit it, send a photo. Landlords, tell us which unit's door it is. Most calls get a same-day window.
We check springs, safety cables, drums, rollers, hinges, track, opener and photo eyes, then lift the door by hand with the opener disconnected to see how it is balanced.
You get the findings and the price before anything is touched. Parts that can safely wait are listed as optional, and anything unsafe is explained plainly.
Springs go in as matched pairs, worn rollers and frayed cables are replaced, and the track is aligned and tightened. Common parts are on the truck, so most jobs are finished on the first visit.
The door is cycled under power and by hand, auto-reverse is tested against an object, and the photo eyes are confirmed in line before we leave.
